Why can't I eat before
my Abdomen Sonogram?
You need to remain NPO (nothing by mouth) for a
minimum of 8 hours before the examination
(includes food, drinks, candy, gum and smoking).
The reason for this is that the Liver and
Gallbladder image better if you have not eaten.
Further, the Gallbladder contracts and releases
its enzymes to aide in digestion. Should you eat
before the exam, the Gallbladder will be
contracted and will not image well which could be
detrimental should you have gallstones that are
difficult to image. Back to Top
Why do I need to fill my
bladder with 32 oz. of fluid prior to my
Obstetric/Pregnancy/Pelvic Sonogram?
Ultrasound transmits through fluid easier than
tissue enabling improved resolution using the
bladder as a "sonic window."
In
pregnancy, it assists the sonographer by
elevating the fetus, dorsi-flexing the lower
uterine segment, which facilitates improved
imaging of both the fetus and the cervix.
On
Pelvic sonograms it assists us in a similar
fashion and also enables us to better image those
patients with fibroids and an enlarged uterus Back to Top
Why do I need to fill my
bladder for a Renal/Kidney Sonogram?
Ultrasound transmits through fluid easier than
tissue enabling improved resolution using the
bladder as a "sonic window." The
bladder must also be visualized to insure there
are no bladder wall tumors.
For
Males: Your physician will want to know how well
you can empty and may want an approximate
prostate size which can only be performed if your
bladder is full. Degree of bladder emptying may
also help to explain any problems with frequent
night trips to the restroom.
For
females, inadequate bladder emptying may be one
of many sources causing incontinence. Back to Top
Why do I need a
trans-vaginal sonogram?
A trans-vaginal sonogram (placement of a small
probe approximately 2" into the vagina)
enables the female pelvic structures to be better
visualized. Trans-abdominal sonograms do not
adequately image the female pelvis. This modality
is the only method to accurately "rule
out" endometrial polyps, small tumors and
fibroids. Further, it enables us to not only
provide detailed information to your physician
regarding the intermal composition of
cysts/tumors should one be present, but also
insures that the ovary has adequate blood flow.
Adolescent
females, females that have never had intercourse
and combative patients are not candidates for a
trans-vaginal sonogram. Back to Top
Can I bring my parents
and husband to see my baby's sonogram?
Normally yes; however, due to the COVID pandemic
only a single visitor will be allowed in during
obstetric procedures. All non-obstetric exams
will be limited to patient only unless the
patient is a minor or needs assistance from their
personal home health provider until the end of
the COVID Pandemic. Back to Top
Is Ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound has been in use at its current level
for over 30 years, and in that time no biological
effects have been demonstrated. The Food and Drug
Adminstration (FDA) also closely regulates the
medical use of Diagnostic Ultrasound and will not
allow a manufacturer to sell or import any
systems for use in the United States that do not
meet their criteria. The FDA criteria is very
stringent as these systems perform on fetuses are
more susceptible to heating and cavitation injury
than are adults. Back to Top
